The ambulance belonging to Rangeli Sahakari Sanstha was carrying a woman and her sick daughter who were headed for Biratnagar. A group of agitating UDMF cadres attacked the ambulance, alleging that it was carrying passengers, according to driver Dilip Mandal.
"I said that there were patients inside but they didn't listen," he said.
According to Mandal, the protestors first attacked the ambulance from behind.
"After the patients got off, they broke the windscreen," he said. They then seized the keys.
Hira Upadhyay and her two-year-old daughter Mansi Bhattarai were in the ambulance that the protestors vandalized.
"Although the protestors vandalized the ambulance, they did not harm us. We're safe," Upadhyay said.
She told Republica that she had gone to Biratnagar for the treatment of her daughter who she suspected was suffering from pneumonia. She was admitted to a private clinic in Biratnagar and her condition was diagnosed as normal.
"However, it is going to be difficult for us to return to our home in Rangauli," she said.
According to the ambulance driver, he had never thought that the protestors would attack an ambulance. "It was unexpected," he added.
Following the incident, the ambulance drivers of Morang reached the district administration office to ensure security arrangements for ambulances.
Earlier on Thursday, locals and cadres of the big three political parties had protested against the demands of the Madhes-based parties.
UDMF cadres torch truck loaded with medicines
In another incident, UDMF cadres in Birgunj, Parsa district torched a truck (Na 2 Kha 8292) carrying drugs, at around 1 am Friday.
The incident took place one day after UDMF decided to allow the movement of cargo vehicles carrying medicines.
The cargo belonging to Shivratri Pharmaceuticals of Shreepur, Birgunj was being readied for transport to Janakpur, according to proprietor Pappu Jha.
According to DSP Hobendra Bogati, local protestors had attacked the cargo truck with a petrol bomb. Medicines worth around Rs 2 million were damaged in the incident.
Similarly, UDMF also set ablaze a cargo truck (3 Kha 4127) in front of Hulas Biscuits Factory along the Birgunj-Pathlaiya road section. It is learnt that the vehicle loaded with maize was heading toward Birgunj from Bhairahawa.
As the police brought the fire under control, further damage was prevented, informed Inspector Pramanand Yadav.
UDMF cadres vandalize Nepal's house in Gaur
UDMF cadres vandalized the house of UML senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal in Gaur, district headquarters of Rautahat, Friday.
