The women were elected Mukhiyas of Sahawajpur Panchayat and Bathanaha Gram Panchayat of Forbesgunj. Following disclosure of their dual citizenship status, Bihar Election Commission has sought information about their Nepali citizenship from the District Administration Office Morang. [break]
Morang´s Chief District Officer Suresh Adhikari confirmed this. “We have received two letters from Arariya. We have already sent reply confirming that the two Mukhiyas have Nepali citizenship certificates,” he said.
Sarita Devi is found to have taken citizenship certificate from Dhanpura, Baidhanpur-7, Morang in the name of Moni Devi Kunwar, while Jaibun Nisha is found to have taken citizenship from Biratnagar Municipality-22.
Sarita Devi is Mukhiya of Sahawajpur Panchayat, while Jaibun is Mukhiya of Bathanaha Panchayat.
The disclosure of dual citizenship status of the two has given strong credence to allegations that a large number of Indian nationals living in bordering Indian towns have acquired Nepali citizenship cards by bribing Nepali officials.
Bihar´s State Election Commission initiated investigation after one Sunita Devi filed a complaint alleging that Sarita Devi holds Nepali citizenship. Rajeev Rathaur, under secretary of the commission ordered the investigation.
Meanwhile, one Dhrubawati Devi of Bathanaha had filed complaint about dual citizenship status of Jaibun Nisha who holds a Nepali citizenship numbered 1624. Ever her husband Aslam Parvej has dual citizenship. His Nepali citizenship number of 1561.
