Three Grand Masters take lead

KATHMANDU, Sept 10: Grand Master (GM) Saidali Iuldachev of Uzbekistan, GM Georgy Timoshenko of Ukraine and GM Georg Mohr of Slovenia won both their chess matches on the second day of the Himalayan Grand Master International Chess Tournament on Friday to take a joint lead with three points each.



Iuldachev defeated India´s FIDE Master (FM) Akshat Khamparia in the second round and India´s Himanshu Sharma in the third. Timoshenko defeated Great Britain´s Ian Thomas in the second round while he beat Uzbekistan´s GM Marat Dzhumaev in the next round. Likewise, Mohr sidelined India´s International Master (IM) Atanu Lahiri and Bangladesh´s FM Mehdi Hasan.[break]



India´s GM Sriram Jha, IM Saptarshi Roy, MR Venkatesh and Bangladesh´s FM Javed Mohammad remained in the second position with 2.5 points each.



Jha drew with Bangladesh´s Debaraj Chatterjee in the second round and defeated Ahmed Minhazuddin in the third round. Roy secured victories over Nepal´s Balaram Napit and India´s Prantik Roy. Venkatesh shared points with Bangladesh´s Debaraj Chatterjee while Mohammed sealed victories Nepal´s Lav Kumar Shrestha and Uttam Raj Thapa.



Nepal´s Badri Lal Nepali, GM Marat Dzhumaev, Romania´s Ionel Luca, India´s Atanu Lahiri, Aksat Khamparia, Himanshu Sharma, Praveen Kumar, French Woman GM Nino Maisuradze, Slovenia´s Narcisa Mihevc-Mohr, Bangladesh´s Ahmed Minhazuddin and Mehdi Hasan collected two points each.



Nepal Champion Badrilal Nepali performed well with double victories. He defeated FIDE Master Manish Hamal and Hari Chandra Chaulagain. Nepal´s Uttam Raj Thgapa, Anil Rajbahak and Prachanda Malakar are trailing behind with 1.5 points points each.
