KATHMANDU, April 21: A team departed for Thame on Monday to participate in the Summiteers’ Summit, a climbers' conference set to take place in Solukhumbu on Tuesday.

The summit, to be organized by Sath Sathai, an organization working in the field of climate justice, is being held as a pre-event to the Sagarmatha Sambad that the Government of Nepal will host from May 15 to 17.

According to Prajita Karki, chairperson of Sath Sathai, the team includes nationally and internationally renowned climbers, climate and tourism experts and government representatives from various levels. Another team, including government ministers, is scheduled to arrive in Thame via helicopter on Tuesday.

Prominent figures attending the summit include Qatar's Princess Asma Al Thani; world-record-holding climber Kami Rita Sherpa, who has summited Everest 31 times; Mingma David Sherpa; youngest Everest summiteer Temba Chhiri Sherpa; and Maya Gurung, among others. Local residents and victims affected by last year’s avalanche in Thame are also expected to participate.

The summit will feature group discussions on climate change, tourism, and various aspects of Himalayan lifestyles.

Sath Sathai is organizing the event in collaboration with the Ministry of Forests and Environment, Koshi Province government, and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality.  Co-organizers include the Nepal Tourism Board, Nepal Mountaineering Association, TEWA, and Nepali Youth for Climate Action.

The Government of Nepal views the Summiteers’ Summit as a key initiative under the broader Sagarmatha Sambad, themed ‘Mountains, Climate Change and the Future of Humanity.’ Delegations from various countries are expected to participate in the main dialogue in May.

Meanwhile, a separate delegation led by Press Council Nepal Chairperson Bal Krishna Basnet and Badri Sigdel, executive member of the International Federation of Journalists (Asia-Pacific), has already reached Khumbu.
