KATHMANDU, Oct 31: Sundar Haraincha in Morang recorded the highest rainfall of 210 millimeters in the last 24 hours due to Cyclone Montha, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM). In comparison, Saptari’s Barmajhiya recorded 143 millimeters of rainfall.
DHM spokesperson Dinkar Kayastha said the cyclone’s impact has been strongest in Madhesh and Koshi provinces, though Bagmati and other provinces are also experiencing cloudy weather and moderate rainfall. “This is considered heavy rainfall. Rain exceeding 200 millimeters falls under the category of very heavy rainfall,” he said.

According to Kayastha, several districts recorded heavy rainfall in the past 24 hours. Jhapa and Udayapur received 93.6 and 97.6 millimeters of rainfall, respectively, while over two dozen rain measurement stations recorded between 50 and 80 millimeters. Lalitpur recorded 72 millimeters and Kathmandu 40 millimeters of rain.
Cyclone Montha, formed in the Bay of Bengal, is currently centered around Madhya Pradesh, India, as a low-pressure system and its effects are expected to persist in Nepal until this evening, Kayastha said.
He added that Nepal is also partly affected by a westerly wind and a low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea. Currently, most parts of the country are cloudy, with light to moderate rainfall in many areas of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, some areas of Lumbini province, and very heavy rainfall in isolated locations.
