KATHMANDU, Dec 24: People in Kathmandu experienced a chilly day on Wednesday as the temperature of the Valley dropped to 0.9 degrees Celsius, a record low in 2015. It was a sharp decline in temperature as the minimum temperature on Tuesday was 3 degrees Celsius. Maximum temperature in the Valley was recorded at 16 degrees Celsius on Wednesday while sub-zero temperature is expected in the coming days.

Earlier in January, the minimum temperature had dropped to 1.4 degrees Celsius. Weather forecasters predict that the minimum temperature will plunged further on Thursday to -1 degree Celsius.Meteorologists, however, said that the drop in the temperature is nothing unusual as the Valley has witnessed up to -2 degrees Celsius temperature in the past.

Quake victims residing in makeshift tents as well as children and elderly people should not expect to heave a sigh of relief as the meteorological office said that the ongoing freezing temperature will remain unabated for next couple of days.

Officials at the Metrological Forecasting Division (MFD) under the Department of Hydrology and Metrology warned of further dip in the temperature, as they said there are no signs of improvement in the weather condition.

"The temperature has been continuously falling across the country since one week and chances of improvement in the weather seem slim," Samir Shrestha, meteorologist at the division, said. He attributed the northerly winds and the clear sky for the chilling temperature.

People of the tarai region and mountainous region are yet to experience cold wave and snow fall. Shrestha, however, said that chances of snow fall in the hilly and mountainous districts are slim, as there is no moister in the air.

People in the tarai region have been suffering from cold as fog and mist engulf the region until afternoon. Meteorologist Shrestha claimed that chances of immediate cold wave in the tarai region is also unlikely in the existing weather condition.

Meanwhile, people of Jumla experienced a frigid day on Wednesday as the minimum temperature fell to -8.4 degrees Celsius. Maximum temperature of the district was 12.5 degrees Celsius.

Likewise, the minimum temperature of Dadeldhura dropped to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Maximum temperature of the district was 12 degrees Celsius. People of Birendranagar too experienced bitter cold as the minimum temperature fell to 1.5 degrees Celsius but the maximum temperature was 19 degrees.

The Minimum temperature of Dipayal had dropped to 1.8 degrees Celsius. Taplejung and Okhaldhunga recorded minimum temperatures of 3.7 and 3.8 degrees Celsius respectively.
