SPORTS BRIEFS: NASA, CCRC into QF

DHANGADHI, Jan 24: NASA College and CCRC advanced into the quarterfinals of the Hotel Devotee Cup National Inter-college T20 Cricket Tournament winning their respective matches on Monday.



In the first match, NASA defeated NAST College of Dhangadhi by seven wickets. [break]



NAST elected to bat first, scored 87 runs losing seven wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Min Kunwar top scored 24 runs in the inning while Bijay Gautam claimed two wickets. In reply, NASA met the target of 88 runs in 10 overs losing only three wickets. NASA´s captain Prem Chaudhary, who was later adjudged the man of the match, scored 34 runs unbeaten.



In another match, CCRC beat Ghodaghodi Multiple Campus (GMC) by 55 runs. Opting to bat first, CCRC scored 160 runs for nine wickets in 20 overs. The opening pair of Mahesh Chhetri and Anil Mandal played a 55 run partnership. Chasing the target, GMC were bundled out in 16 overs with 105 runs. NASA´s Anil Mandal was declared the man of the match.



Three Star renew deal with Nabil



KATHMANDU: Nabil Bank has renewed sponsorship contract with the Three Star Club of Lalitpur for one more year on Monday, Lalit Krishna Shrestha, the president of the club confirmed. Three Star, officially named as Nabil Three Star, had established relations with the bank in 2006. The new contract will be valid through 2011. Three Star are the first professional football team of Nepal to add the name of a corporate before their name. However, the amount of deal has not yet been disclosed.



Women´s football in Janakpur



JANAKPUR: A stage has been set for women´s knockout football tournament to kick off in Janakpur from Saturday. Altogether seven teams from the Tarai region and one from Bihar, India, will compete in the Janaki Gold Cup National Women´s Football Tournament which is being organized by Dhanusha Football Association and Piradi Youth Club. The eight-day event which will be held at the Janakpur Cigarette Factory´s ground will conclude on February 5. The organizers have fixed the ticket price at Rs 30.



NIS passed out given certificates



KATHMANDU: The candidates who passed their assistant coach training (NIS) conducted by National Sports Council (NSC) were give away certificate on Monday. Altogether 749 trainees, including 14 from para, had attended the training. Among them, 210 got distinction, 520 first division and five second division. Altogether, 41 different events were included in the training. NSC Member Secretary Hari Babu Chaudhary distributed the certificates. Meanwhile, NSC Member Samim Miya Ansari, who was also the coordinator of NIS program, and Partha Sarathisen Gupta, the director of Nepal Sports Foundation, were also honored in the same function.



Golden Gate, NASA in semis



KATHMANDU: Golden Gate and NASA on Monday advanced into the semifinals under men´s section in the Kirtipur Mahotsav Cup Open Women and Men Basketball Tournament being held in Kirtipur. Golden Gate had a thumping 113-36 victory over Caribbean College. Joel Borteli scored 35 points for the winning side. NASA thrashed Prime 72-46 riding on 24 points of Robin Khatri. In another match, Whitehouse eased past Bhanimandal 65-25 to secure a place in last four. Binod Shrestha netted 11 points for the winning side. In women´s round robin matches, Nakkhipot and Prime won their respective matches. Nakkhipot hammered Rara Hill 64-7 and Prime thrashed Xavier International 49-17. Rohini Limbu contributed 20 points for Nakkhipot and Gyanu Gauchan scored 11 points for Prime.
