Judokas return home empty handed
KATHMANDU: Nepali judokas on Sunday returned home empty handed from the Asian Judo Championship held from April 26 to 29 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Upendra Thapa was defeated by Wang Ki Chung of Korea in the first round of the championship. Thapa had participated in the 73 kg weight category. Sushila Adhikari, who had participated in 52kg weight category, also faced same fate in the first round at the hand of Malaysian player.
Suwal clinches Abu Dhabi Open TT
KATHMANDU: Ajay Suwal on Sunday lifted the Abu Dhabi Open Table Tennis Championship held in Dubai. Suwal defeated Umesh of India in the final by 11-8, 11-8, 11-13, 11-9 for the title. Suwal had qualified for the finals following victory over Jonathan Zaragosa of Philippines in straight sets. Suwal had left to Dubai on April 16. Before competing in the event, Suwal had trained at Deep Sports Table Tennis Academy, Al Karama, Dubai from April 17 to 25.
Rajan Memorial triumph
KATHMANDU: Rajan Memorial registered 79 runs victory over EPS on Sunday in the 5th Chief of the Army Staff Inter School Running Cricket Tournament. In the match played at Army School Ground, Rajan Memorial won the toss and scored 139 runs in 20 overs losing seven wickets. Pramod Khatri scored 48 runs off 51 balls while Kiran Saud scored 26 runs. Rajan Memorial received 40 runs as extras. Prakash Kumar Shah and Rahul Chaudhary grabbed two wickets each for EPS. In its run chase, EPS was restricted on 60 runs off 13.5 overs. Sujan Chapagain grabbed 4 wickets and Kiran Saud took 2 wickets to restrict EPS at a low score. Rahul Chaudhary scored 11 runs off 29 balls and became the only batsman to reach double digit figure. EPS received 27 runs as extras.
New Diamond lifts volleyball title
KATHMANDU: New Diamond Academy on Sunday lifted the trophy of the First Chandeshwari Cup Open Women´s Volleyball Tournament being held in Ramechhap. New Diamond defeated Dhankuta District Sports Development Committee in straight sets to lift the trophy.
New Diamond took the first set 25-5, second 25-10 and third set by 25-6. Following the win, New Diamond bagged Rs 50, 000 while Dhankuta satisfied with Rs 30,000 along with trophies, medals and certificates.
New Diamond skipper Ramila Tandukar received the best player trophy and mobile. Tandukar was also declared the best spiker and awarded with a purse of Rs 2,500. Salina Shrestha and Kripa Adhikari of New Diamond were declared the best defender and the best lifter respectively. They bagged Rs Rs 2,500 each. Jiwani Rai of Dhankuta bagged Rs 2,500 as the best server.
Gokul Ganga High School clinched the third position and bagged Rs 15,500 while host Chandeshori Yuwa Club finished fourth and bagged a purse of Rs 10,500.
Players selected for ANFA Academy
KATHMANDU: All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) on Sunday selected 37 players between 12 to 14 years for ANFA Academy. According to a press statement issued by ANFA, the players were selected from among 4,200 players from 42 districts after three phases of selection. Besides providing regular training to the selected players, ANFA will make arrangements for food and accommodation and also provide scholarship to the players. ANFA has been running football academies at ANFA headquarters Satdobato, Dharan and Butwal.
