Snakebite cases on rise in Tarai

SARLAHI, June 8: Snakebite cases have gone up significantly in the Tarai districts. A total of 76 people have been bitten by snakes in Sarlahi district over the last week alone.

In the past one week alone, 47 cases of snake bite have been registered in the District Hospital, Malangwa, Sarlahi. The hospital administration said the snakebite patients outnumber other patients.

On Saturday alone, 15 new snakebite cases have been registered at the hospital, according to Kishor Khanal, public health supervisor at the hospital.Likewise, more than 29 snakebite cases have been registered at health centers in Nawalpur.

Sushant Gole, 10, of Lalbandi municipality-8, died of the snakebite, health worker Kalpana Mainali informed. According to his family source, the deceased along with his parents were sleeping when the cobra bit him at 5 am on Friday. He was admitted to Nawalpur-based Snakebite Treatment Center for treatment. He was referred to Birgunj but could not be cured there. He breathed his last while being rushed to India for treatment.

Snakebite cases have also increased in other Tarai districts.

Meanwhile, Dr Chhabi Lal Thapa of Bharatpur Hospital, Chitwan, said many snakebite patients from various Tarai districts have been admitted at the hospital. The snakebite patients are victims of venomous snakes like krait and cobra.

Dr Thapa further said he has been visiting snakebite treatment centers in Sindhuli and Sarlahi districts. According to him, krait snakes are usually found inside the houses, while cobras are outside.

"Most of the snakebite victims are women from southern parts of Tarai," said Dr Thapa. "They were bitten by snakes while defecating in the open at night."

More women than men snakebite patients have been admitted in Malangwa based district hospital, according to the administration.

Last year, scores of people died of snakebite in the Tarai districts. As per the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD), even when sufficient anti-venom is supplied, hundreds of people die of snakebite every year.
