Issuing a press release on Wednesday, the police informed that they have confiscated 119 cartons each containing 60 chicks at Germi VDC-6 in the district. They were smuggled from India on Tuesday night, according to the police.
However, the police has yet to identify the importer of the seized chicks worth Rs 4,28,000, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rajendra Prasad Chaudhari.
The police informed that the confiscated poultry has been handed over to Maheshpur-based Animal Quarantine Check Post.
There is a racket of smugglers involved in the illegal imports of poultry products in the country. According to local entrepreneurs, the smuggling of chicken from India has adversely affected their business.
According to reports, one million illegally imported poultry was confiscated last year.
Nepal Hatchery Industries Association said that some hatcheries themselves are involved in such illegal trade. Deepak Pandey, chairperson of Poultry Farmers Association at Nawalpur, Chitwan, said the low cost for the poultry products in India is the key reason for the continued illegal trade.
