Slaughtering meat sale banned in 8 places

KATHMANDU, May 5: The government has prohibited animal slaughtering and sale of meat products in eight different places in the Kathmandu Valley fearing outbreak of diseases after the devastating earthquake of April 25.

District Administration Office (DAO), Kathmandu issued a public notice on Tuesday, restricting animal slaughtering and sale of meat in Sundhara, Basantapur, Ason, Tyaud, Gangabu, New Baspark, Balaju and Sakhu areas.

Earlier, the government had urged people not to slaughter birds and animals and sell meat fearing outbreak of diseases."Excavations of collapsed buildings is underway in different parts of the country. There might be corpses in the debris," Ek Narayan Aryal, Chief District Officer of Kathmandu, told Republica.""We have put a ban on slaughtering and sale of meat as the chances of contamination is high in these areas."

Aryal also informed that the ban will be for a short period of time. "We will take legal action against those who are found slaughtering birds and animals in these these prohibited areas," he added.
