The 15-year old Gurung completed the distance in 19 minute 05.25 seconds to shatter his own record of 19 minute 48.16 second set about two months ago during the 17th Open National and Age Group Championship at the Satdobato Swimming Pool in Kathmandu. [break]
Gurung however, failed to qualify for the final round. In course of setting the new record in Kathmandu Gurung had shattered the record of Jay Prakash Gurung set during 1984 South Asian Games (SAF) in Kathmandu. Teenager Gurung holds a total of six national records.
Gurung, who also competed in 200 m freestyle and 400 m freestyle, crashed out from the heats as well. Gurung completed the 200m in 2 minute 17.51 second.
The performance of other three swimmers were not satisfactory as well and all crashed out from the heats. Olympian Shreya Dhital competed in 50m freestyle and 100m freestyle. Dhital completed 50m in 34.27 second and took 1 minute 17.87 second for 100m.
In his first international event, Miraj Prajapati competed in the 50m backstroke and 100m freestyle. Prajapati took 34.43 second to swim 50m and 1 minute 02.66 second to finish 100m.
Aditi Dhital clocked 36.59 second to finish 50m freestyle and 1 minute 17.87 second to finish 100m freestyle.
