Koirala who represented Ram Chandra Paudel panel garnered 1347 votes, 140 votes more than his nearest contender KC (983 votes). Thapa mustered 537 votes only.
Koirala is a medical doctor and represents Nawalparasi-1 in parliament. He is son of former prime minister BP Koirala.
A total of 3148 votes were cast in today's general secretary election.

Meanwhile, Sita Devi Yadav has been elected as new treasurer of the party with 1217 votes. Yadav who represented Paudel panel made a narrow victory of just 9 votes from her nearest contender Chitra Lekha Yadav (1209 votes) of Deuba panel. The other contenders for the post Umakant Chaudhary and Krishna Karki collected 402 and 58 votes respectively.
Party senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba got elected as NC President securing 1,822 votes against his close contender NC Acting President Ram Chandra Poudel's 1,296 votes.
The first round of election for NC new leadership was held on Sunday.
The party went for the second round of voting after none of the presidential candidates secured over 50 percent of the votes cast as per the party statute.
