GORKHA, June 9: Nepali Congress (NC) President Gagan Thapa has taken a sharp swipe at the government over the ongoing investigation involving former Home Minister Sudan Gurung, questioning the intent and handling of the probe.
Speaking during an event in Gorkha, Thapa said that political leaders currently in power must also be ready to clearly explain the source of their wealth and assets when questioned by citizens.
He said that public officials—including the Prime Minister and ministers—are expected to disclose their financial background when taking office, and must be able to justify the legality of their assets when questioned.

“Just like we are showing courage, those of you who have become Prime Minister or ministers should also be able to explain where your wealth came from,” Thapa said. “Can you confidently show the legal source of your assets if citizens ask?”
Taking a more pointed jab at the government’s handling of the probe into Sudan Gurung, Thapa questioned the necessity of the investigation process itself.
“From the way things are being handled, it feels like the accused and the investigator are on the same side. Why create such unnecessary complications? They could have simply said ‘no wrongdoing’ from the beginning,” he remarked.
His comments add further political tension amid ongoing scrutiny and debates over transparency, accountability, and asset disclosures in public office.
