SC submits annual report to President

KATHMANDU, Feb 21: The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday submitted its annual report to President Dr Ram Baran Yadav.



According to the report, 5.85 % more cases have been settled through the SC during the year as compared to the previous fiscal year.



The SC settled 44.74 cases in the previous fiscal year. Nearly 50 % of backlog cases have been settled through the SC this year, states the report.[break]



Some 6,355 new cases were registered at the SC this year. “We settled 1,717 (27.02%) cases out of the total of newly registered cases,” reads the report.



Similarly, appellate courts have settled 14.94 % more cases across the country as compared to the previous fiscal year. Fifteen of the appellate courts have settled more than 60 % of backlog cases this year. The report states that some 39 district courts have settled more than 40.69 % of cases within fiscal year 2066/067 BS.



After receiving the report, President Yadav praised the role of the judiciary. “It has come to my notice that the Judiciary has been playing a laudable role even in a difficult situation,” Dr Yadav said.



The president has also urged the chief justice, other justices and judiciary staff to be alert towards the independence of the judiciary.
