KATHMANDU, Nov 24: The Supreme Court has issued a directive to the government to hold the local elections by creating appropriate environment for the long overdue voting process of the local bodies.

A division bench of Chief Justice Kalyan Shrestha and Justice Devendra Gopal Shrestha on Monday issued the directive in response to a writ petition filed by Advocate Sunil Ranjan Singh four years ago. Advocate Singh had filed the writ petition on November 2, 2011 demanding court orders to hold local elections. The apex court on Monday quashed the petition but issued the directive, drawing attention of the government on creating favorable environment for holding elections of the local bodies.

This is third time that the apex court has drawn the attention of the government for holding elections of the local bodies. On November 8, 2013, a division bench of the then Chief Justice Khilaraj Regmi and Justice Prakash Wasti had ordered to hold local elections in appropriate time, responding to a writ petition filed by three different organizations of local bodies. Likewise, a division bench of the then Justices Balaram KC and Bharat Raj Upreti in 2010 had issued similar directive after a writ petition was filed by Advocate Chandra Kanta Gyawali.

The last local elections were held in 1997.
