SAARC regional environment meet begins

KATHMANDU, Feb 11: A two-day South Asia regional conference on “Regional Environmental Issues: Water and Disaster Management” kicked off in Kathmandu Saturday.



Experts from all SAARC countries except the Maldives are presenting papers on related issues in the conference organized by Center for South Asian Studies in cooperation with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung. [break]



Addressing the function, former Minister for Water Resources Dipak Gyawali emphasized on the need of proper institutional mechanisms at local level to respond to such calamities.



He suggested the SAARC countries to launch a common weather satellite which can significantly contribute to enhanced security in the entire region.



Likewise, Secretary at the Ministry of Environment Krishna Gyawali stressed on the need of broader cooperation among countries to deal with environmental issues. He complained that frequent transfers of top bureaucrats have hindered the implementation of plans aimed at responding to such challenges.
