KATHMANDU, July 14: Government of Nepal has allocated a total budget of Rs 2.07 billion for the sports sector for fiscal year 2015/16, an increase of about Rs 500 million compared to last year.

However, the Ministry of Youth and Sports will get only Rs 1.85 billion in the form of current expenditure. The remaining amount of around 2.5 million has been allocated under the head of urban infrastructure in the form of capital expenditure.

The current expenditure is Rs 380 million more than that of last fiscal year, while the capital expenditure Rs 3.5 million less.

"Though we had demanded around Rs 3 billion, only around Rs 2 billion has been allocated. Had we been able to spend the whole budget allocated last year, we could have gotten more this time," said Purusottam Paudel, the minister for Youth and Sports. "The budget allocation depends upon our capacity to spend."

"Overall, the budget allocation is satisfactory. National Sports Council could not spend whole budget in the last fiscal. As a result, around Rs 250 million was frozen," said Keshav Kumar Bista, the newly appointed member secretary of the NSC.

The budget has given top priority to the game of cricket. "Rs 210 million has been allocated to construct cricket grounds at various places of the country," Mahat said.

Similarly, the construction of Mulpani cricket ground, reconstruction of Dasharath Stadium, construction of an international standard covered hall in the capital and upgrading the TU cricket ground and the Pulchowk cricket ground has been kept as a sub-head under urban development.

Mahat announced to provide Rs 110 million for the construction of Mulpani ground. Similarly, Rs 130 million has been allocated for the reconstruction of Dasharath Stadium damaged by the devastating earthquake.

"As an alternative to Dasharath Stadium, Chyasal football ground will be used for the time being, and Rs 40 million has been allocated for construction of latter," Mahat said.
