The CJN has said that it conferred the award to Ghimire in recognition for his contribution for the overall development of cooperatives through his efforts on in-depth reporting and outstanding writing on cooperative sector. Ghimire, who is affiliated with Republica as a financial journalist since November 2013, was awarded with the cooperative journalism award amid a ceremony held to mark the CJN's fifth establishment day.
Secretary at the Ministry of Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation (MoCPA), Shankar Prasad Adhikari, handed over the award, which carries a purse of Rs 5,000 and a certificate, to Ghimire.
Speaking at the ceremony, MoCPA Secretary Adhikari said that the government was drafting policies to encourage merger among the cooperatives. "Cooperatives have played a vital role in uplifting people from poverty. They have also contributed a lot to the national economy," said Secretary Adhikari.
"However, there are also shortcomings and mismanagement in some cooperatives. The new cooperatives draft law, which is currently under discussion, aims to overcome such shortcomings through additional measures of regulation," he added.
