Rautes submit 9-point memo to CA Chair Nembang

KATHMANDU, Aug 7: The Rautes-- people belonging a nomadic ethnic group-- have submitted a nine-point memorandum to Constituent Assembly Chairman, Subas Nembang on Friday, demanding that the group be enlisted as an indigenous community in the new constitution.

A total of six members along with deputy tribal leader of the Raute community, Shivaraj Shahi, demanded at the meeting to mention their language, culture, costumes and religion in the new constitution. They also asserted that they do not, however, want to leave the jungle.The memo calls for enlisting the Raute Community in the list of Indigenous community, representation of the Raute in different bodies including at the provincial and local level, guarantee of their rights to life with self-respect, establishment of a museum to protect their culture, among others.

On the occasion, CA Chairman Nembang, after learning that the representatives of the Raute community arrived here to collect food stuffs for different cultures like Dashain, Tihar, said that he would inform the Prime Minister about their demands and would take initiatives for the same.

He further said that attention should be given to the minority community in course of constitution writing. The delegation, on the behalf of Raute Community, presented a wooden chest to CA Chairman Nembang while Nembang presented Bhadgaunle topi (typical Nepali cap) and kachhad (loin cloth) to them. RSS
