KATHMANDU, July 27: Amid internal disputes within the Nagarik Unmukti Party (NUP), party chair Ranjita Shrestha has stepped aside, appointing senior vice-chair Shiv Bastola as acting chairperson.
This move follows an ultimatum issued by a majority of central committee members on Friday, demanding a party meeting within 24 hours.
Chairperson Shrestha, citing health concerns, handed over the responsibility to Bastola, a senior leader from Pokhara Metropolitan City–6.

In her letter, Shrestha wrote, “Due to my health condition, it is not possible for me to be physically present for daily party operations and important decisions. To avoid any disruption in party functioning, I have made this decision.”
The appointment of Bastola as Acting Chair comes at a time when the party is grappling with growing internal rifts.
