KATHMANDU, May 13: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli said that the Nepali film industry should prioritize its own heritage and potential.

Addressing the opening ceremony of a film studio in Kathmandu on Tuesday, he expressed pride in the railway service operating in Janakpur and urged filmmakers to feature domestic landmarks and heritage in their music videos and other audio-visual productions instead of using the foreign ones.

“Why feature a Darjeeling train in Nepali films and songs when there’s a train running in Janakpur? Why not showcase what we’ve achieved ourselves?” he questioned.

He proposed the construction of a Cine City in Palungtar, Gorkha, stating that the railway line, the Marshyangdi River, and the natural beauty of the surrounding Himalayan ranges could help elevate Nepali cinema to a global standard.

PM Oli mentioned that cinematic scenes could be shot in Palungtar with the majestic backdrop of Himalayan ranges such as Machhapuchhre, Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, and Langtang.

“Scenes featuring the lead actor and the lead actress in films shot in and around the Marshyangdi area,  the shots of Nepali train, the hills, and the lakes can make a film come alive,” he said, “By utilizing places like Bandipur, Dumre, Phewa Lake, and Sarangkot, filmmakers from around the world will be drawn to Nepal.”
