KATHMANDU, May 21: The Malaysian government has introduced a new policy that allows migrant workers to change employers across various sectors. As a major employment destination for hundreds of thousands of Nepalis, Malaysia is expected to offer significant benefits to Nepali workers under this decision.

Malaysia's Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail announced the decision during the 13th Joint Committee Meeting on Migrant Worker Management. This move will benefit workers employed in formal sectors such as manufacturing, construction, agriculture, and plantations. It will also allow migrant workers in the service sector—including hotels and tourism—to change employers.

Previously, the Malaysian government had allowed migrant workers to switch employers only within the same field. That provision depends on conditions such as company restructuring, closure, expansion, or approval from a committee under the labor department. The new policy introduces greater flexibility, enabling workers to transfer across different sectors.

This decision creates a valuable opportunity for Nepali workers in Malaysia. The government has aligned the policy with recommendations from the International Labor Organization (ILO). It is expected to play a crucial role in protecting workers' rights and ensuring freedom in their workplaces.
