Following the discovery, officials initially believed Ansari might still have been operating from the jail despite the assault on him and several restrictions imposed by the jail administration. Things, however, turned out to be different after Metropolitan Police Crime Division (MPCD) questioned both the Pakistani national and Ansari´s aide.
According to officials, Suraj Bhattarai, a staffer of National Television owned by Ansari, accompanied Mehmud Khan to the jail a couple of hours after he had returned leaving food for Ansari. Suraj himself has a criminal record and was released from jail last year after serving a five-year term for robbery.
Khan claimed that he brought the money to pay the fine slapped by the court on his friend Abdul Ali, who has been serving a 15-year term for drug trafficking in the same jail. He even produced documents issued by the Immigration Department for the amount he was carrying.
Officials also found that Bhattarai and Ali had befriended each other in the jail. “We let them go after finding the money legal” said an official.
