GAUR, Rautahat, Sept 26: The traditional occupation of people of the Gaund community is in crisis.

The people of the minority and marginalized Gaund community have been traditionally engaged in making the puffed rice. They have been eking out a living by selling the puffed rice in local markets for ages.

But their traditional occupation is in crisis these days as it has been overshadowed by the changed preference of consumers and the employment of machines for making puffed rice.

The population of Gaund is estimated to be about 12,000 spread in Bara, Parsa and Rautahat districts, according to Dipendra Saha Gaund, President of Nepal Gaund Youth Society, Parsa.

Central president of the Gaund Youth Society, Sunit Saha Gaund said the Gaund community is backward in terms of income, education and health.
