KATHMANDU, Feb 10: The Nepal Students' Union (NSU) chapter of Tribhuvan University (TU) Central Campus has objected to the establishment of a police office on the Tribhuvan University campus. The NSU, in a statement, demanded the immediate removal of the police outpost from the university premises.
The statement, signed by the committee's chairman, Kishor Bhandari, and Secretary Ashwin Duwadi, reads, “The university is a zone of peace. It is a universal belief that universities, where educational and research activities take place, should be free of fear, anxiety, and distress. Every student, professor, and researcher has the right to carry out their educational activities in a peaceful environment within the university premises.”
Arguing that the recent establishment of a police office within the TU campus has the potential to create discomfort and mental pressure for students and professors, the NSU said that the establishment of police outposts within the TU campus premises is likely to devalue the university's independence and academic environment.

The NSU has concluded that the establishment of the police office is contrary to the autonomy and peaceful environment of educational institutions.
“The main purpose of the university is to impart education and promote research. The establishment of a police office in a university, where various types of research and discoveries should be carried out in a peaceful environment, hinders the clean and open conduct of academic activities and destroys the peaceful environment of the university,” the statement said.
The TU committee of NSU has strongly demanded that the Tribhuvan University administration and all relevant stakeholders immediately remove the police office from the university premises. The NSU believes that this step will make the academic environment more comfortable and safe and protect the university's independence and independent thinking.
The TU committee of NSU has also informed the Ministry of Home Affairs, Singha Durbar, Kathmandu; the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Singha Durbar; the Office of the Vice-Chancellor of TU, Kirtipur; the District Police Office, Kathmandu; and the Police Office, Kirtipur, for their reference.
