NHRC spokesperson Tikaram Pokharel said the commission has noted comments and criticisms circulating on social media and in some news outlets concerning the human rights situation and the commission's role in the incident.
He said the commission has received additional complaints and memorandums about damages and alleged human rights violations that occurred during and after the incident. Taking the gravity of the situation and the complaints into account, the NHRC mobilized investigation teams on the same day the incident took place, Pokharel added.
A team, including NHRC member Manoj Duwadi, met with Nawaraj Subedi, the coordinator of the United People's Movement Committee, who was reportedly placed under house arrest. The team also visited various hospitals to gather information on those held in police custody and assess the condition of the injured receiving medical treatment.
Spokesperson Pokharel urged all concerned parties to cooperate with the commission's ongoing investigation and fact-finding process.
