NHRC begins investigation into Rangeli incident

KATHMANDU, Feb 16: A high-level investigation team from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday began its investigation into the incidents that took place in Rangeli and Dainiya of Morang district on January 2. Three people were killed in separate police firings then.

A high-level investigation team comprising NHRC spokeswoman Mohana Ansari and commissioner Govinda Sharma Paudyal reached Rangeli Monday and started the investigation. According to NHRC, the team has recorded statements separately from officials at the District Administration Office, security chiefs in the district, and eyewitnesses.


Draupadi Devi Chaudhary, 60, of Rangeli-4, Mahadev Rishidev of Bardanga-2 and Shibu Majhi of Dainiya-9 were killed in the police action. The security forces had opened fire following clashes between the cadres of the UML the UDMF. The confrontation between the two sides had ensued after the UDMF cadres upon hearing that Prime Minister K P Oli was attending the function organized by the CPN-UML's youth wing Youth Association Nepal, attempted to disrupt the function.
