A highly placed source at the parliament secretariat said it is preparing to start the nomination process for the new speaker from Wednesday. The next meeting of parliament has been scheduled for Wednesday at 3 pm."Nomination process for the new speaker will start on Wednesday and is likely to be conclude by Friday," said the source. As per Article 299 of the new constitution, it is mandatory to pick a new speaker within 20 days of the first sitting of parliament.
Speaker Subas Nembang plans to resigns from his post before the nomination process starts, claimed the source. Leaders of the ruling political parties have said that the UCPN (Maoist) is being asked to file candidacy for the post, said Maoist leader Shakti Basnet.
The House will first call for consensus among the political parties, allocating a few days for the purpose, and if consensus fails, the speaker will be elected through majority vote. Election of the deputy speaker is to be held only after the election of the speaker.
