Nepal finishes fifth in shooting

GUWAHATI, Feb 13: Nepal on Friday finished fifth in the team events of the 10m air rifle event in the 12th South Asian Games being held in Shillong and Guwahati of India. Olympian Tikam Shrestha, Pawan Ghimire and Krishna Bahadur Ghorasaini collected 1745.9 points. Individually, Tikaram collected 590.6, Pawan gained 588.8 and Krishna Bahadur collected 566.5 points.

India claimed gold in the event scoring 1863.4 points, while Bangladesh won silver medal with 1845.5 points. Sri Lanka collected 1824.2 points to win the bronze medal. Shooters that scored more than 600 points individually got chances to compete in the final round and Chain Singh of India bagged gold in the individual event scoring 204.6 points in the final. Shovon Chaudhary of Bangladesh and Gagan Narang of India won silver and bronze medal, respectively.


Mixed results in women's kabbadi

Nepali women's team recorded victory over Pakistan in kabbadi event at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium. Nepal recorded 41-10 point's victory over Pakistan.

Nepali team, which had lost two previous matches, looked stronger from the beginning against Pakistan. Earlier, Nepal had lost to India and Sri Lanka.

Nepal had a good start against Sri Lanka on Friday, with both teams once on 10-10 points, however, Sri Lanka won the match by 21-13. Nepal had lost is opener against India. Nepal will face Bangladesh in its

last league match of the event.

Meanwhile, men's team faced a 23-47 point's defeat against the host India. By the end of the first half, Nepal was behind eight points with 11-19. Later, India did not take any risk and Nepal collected points mostly from raid.

India collected 28 points, while Nepal collected only 12 points in the second half. Nepal had faced 13-34 defeat against Pakistan on Thursday.

Disappointing results in handball

Both women and men's team faced defeats in the handball event on Friday. Women's team faced 47-20 goal's defeat against India. India scored 20 goals in the first half and added 27 goals in the second half, while Nepal scored eight goals in the first half and 13 goals in the second half.

On Thursday Nepali women's team had defeated Sri Lanka by 36-24.

In men's section, Nepal faced a humiliating defeat against Pakistan by 50-15. Pakistan scored 24 goals in the first half and 26 goals in the second half, while Nepal scored only five goals and added 10 goals in the second half.

Basketball

The basketball event was not held in the 12th South Asian Games following the differences between Indian Olympic Committee (IOC) and International Basketball Federation (FIBA). The difference was seen after the IOC formed an ad hoc committee

by dissolving the elected one.

The FIBA warned that it will take action against the teams taking part in the competition.

Although India tried to host the event, the FIBA had cautioned all its members against taking part in the event.

Nepali men and women teams had landed in India five days ago after taking special trainings in Thailand.

Nepal Basketball Association President Lama Tendi Sherpa said that India played with the future of basketball players following the dispute between two the associations.

Meanwhile, Nepali women's team beat Bhutan by 47-26 in a friendly match on Friday.
