KATHMANDU, Oct 15: Nepali Congress on Wednesday has decided to contest for key state positions in the upcoming elections in parliament.

A meeting of NC's office bearers has taken the decision to contest for the key positions of the president, vice-president, speaker and deputy speaker."As we contested in the election for prime minister, we have decided to also contest for the remaining key state positions. In this regard, we have decided to discuss filing candidacies for these positions with other political parties that supported us in the election for prime minister [earlier this week]," said NC spokesperson Dilendra Prasad Badu.

"We have also decided to discuss the issue with all parties in parliament," he added.

Though the meeting decided to contest in the elections for key state position, it did not discuss about the possible candidates, according to Badu.

Badu said the meeting of office-bearers reached a conclusion that the prime ministerial election has polarized national politics.

"We reviewed the candidacy of NC President Sushil Koirala for the position of prime minister. We concluded that his candidacy brought democratic forces together. We'll cautiously wait and see how long this polarization will continue," said Badu.

"However, we'll also see the response of the ruling coalition regarding the election for key state positions," he added.

The meeting also thanked the political parties that supported Koirala's prime ministerial bid, and urged them to maintain the democratic coalition in future.

"The meeting reiterated that there should be consensus among all parties regarding national and constitutional issues but the Nepali Congress should watch the government's every move as an opposition party," said Badu.

NC President Sushil Koirala had contested against UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli for the position of Prime Minister. The parliament on Sunday had elected Oli from its majority as the 38th prime minister of the country.
