ITAHARI, July 31: Nepali Congress (NC) cadres enforced a shutdown in Sunsari district headquarters Inaruwa on Sunday protesting the death of fellow party cadre Sanu Yadav who was shot by police on Friday.

The protestors placed the body on the road throughout the day and obstructed vehicular movement along the East-West Highway shouting slogans against police atrocity.

Yadav was injured in police firing during a clash at the Area Police Office, Devangunj that ensued after the police seized cotton being brought illegally from India.

He died on Saturday evening while undergoing treatment at BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan. Cadres of other political parties and locals from Yadav´s village also joined the demonstrations. NC has claimed that a team from Sunsari Police led by inspector Shyamal Subba resorted to firing though the situation was under control.

Yadav´s body was cremated in Sunsari river in the evening. NC has been demanding action against the guilty, compensation for the victim´s family and declaration of the deceased as a martyr.

Meanwhile, the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) has expressed concern over Yadav´s death. It has demanded that the government form a judicial commission to probe the incident and provide compensation to the family of the deceased.

“If the government takes the incident lightly it will have to face the consequences,” said Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar, Chairman of the Madhesi People´s Rights Forum-Democratic, while addressing a press conference at Singh Durbar on Sunday.

Gachchhadar also accused the government of trying to create disorder in the Tarai.
