“It is ridiculous. It has no locus standi,” said senior NC leader Ram Sharan Mahat. [break]
Mahat´s remarks has come in response to media reports that second-rung leaders of major political parties, including NC and UML, had agreed in Switzerland on a mixed model of governance with the provision of a directly elected president and a prime minister elected by parliament.
“It speaks of the mess donor countries are creating in Nepal. Too many donors are arranging too many sundry trips,” he further said.
Mahat also argued that there is no point in raising questions over implementation of such an agreement when many other written agreements among the political parties have been left unimplemented.
“The Maoists have not implemented agreements signed with other parties and here we are talking about the commitments made by individuals on NGO-sponsored trips,” he said.
NC Vice-president Ram Chandra Paudel, emerging from the Constitutional Committee meeting, had also denied that the party had reached any agreement on the system of governance.
“We have not reached any agreement on system of governance. This is just propaganda,” he said. “The Nepali Congress has not sent anyone as the party representative to any such trips.”
However, CPN-UML leader Bhim Rawal, who was also one of the participants of the trip, said they had gone to Switzerland following the party´s decision and reached the agreement with consent from party leadership.
He argued that it is not fair to raise the issue of implementing one particular agreement while ignoring all others. “It is natural to show reluctance as many other agreements such as November 1 seven-point deal has not been implemented by the Maoists,” he added.
