KATHMANDU, May 29: A rally was organized here this morning to mark the 8th International Mount Everest Day.

The rally began after the garlanding of the statues of first Everest summiteers Tenzing Norgay Sherpa of Nepal and Sir Admund Hillary of New Zealand at the Nepal Tourism Board premises in Bhrikutimandap. Participants of the rally that began from NTB premises passed through Padmodaya road, Putalisadak, Kamaladi, Ghantaghar, Ratnapark before dispersing upon reaching back to the starting point.

Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Kripasur Sherpa, Secretary Suresh Man Shrestha, high-ranking officials of the Ministry, Nepali and foreign mountaineers, and mountain tourism entrepreneurs as well as members of the public took part in the rally.

The Mt Everest Day is being observed since 2008 commemorating the historic feat of the first human ascent to the world's tallest mountain, known locally as Sagarmatha, by Sherpa and Hillary on this very day i.e. May 29 in 1953.

Celebrations of the Day have been subdued due to the devastating April 25 earthquake that hit more than half of Nepal including triggering an avalanche at Everest Base camp. RSS
