Monarchists attempt to storm Narayanhiti Palace

As a group of supporters of former King Gyanendra Shah tried to enter the Narayanhiti Palace Museum, security personnel gathered in large numbers and tried to bring the situation under control.

KATHMANDU, March 1: The Durbarmarg area of Kathmandu remained tense as a group of of monarchists protesting in the area on Saturday attempted to storm into the Narayanhiti Palace Museum.


As a group of supporters of former King Gyanendra Shah tried to enter the Narayanhiti Palace Museum, security personnel gathered in large numbers and tried to bring the situation under control.


A crowd had gathered in front of the Narayanhiti Museum accumulating the protesters who rallied from Samakhusi to reach Durbarmarg.

They chanted slogans like ‘Down with the Republic’, ‘Long live Monarchy’, ‘We need a king’ and ‘Return King, save the country’. Supporters carried the national flag on bikes and foot, while some even carried a large photograph of the former king.


They waved flags and danced. Sloganeering and crowding in front of the palace have disrupted the road and there is also a problem in traffic management.


Supporters of former King Gyanendra Shah have also demanded that the crown kept in the Narayanhiti Museum should be reinstated to the former king.


Security personnel have been deployed to bring the situation under control while additional police personnel have been deployed in Narayanhiti area. The security situation in the Durbar marg area has become sensitive as the protests by the royalists continue.
