Minister Pandey and UNESCO Chief Jaco du Toit hold talks on Lumbini

The meeting, which took place at the Ministry of Culture on Thursday, centered on strategies to prevent Lumbini — listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site — from being placed on the endangered list.

KATHMANDU, May 22: Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Badri Prasad Pandey, held an important discussion with UNESCO Representative to Nepal, Mr Jaco du Toit, focusing on the preservation of Lumbini.


The meeting, which took place at the Ministry of Culture on Thursday, centered on strategies to prevent Lumbini — listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site — from being placed on the endangered list.

Minister Pandey informed the UNESCO representative that various corrective measures are being implemented in Lumbini in accordance with UNESCO standards. He also highlighted that the government has already begun executing a detailed action plan. Emphasizing long-term protection, the Minister expressed the need for continued technical and institutional support from UNESCO to ensure Lumbini remains permanently safeguarded from being categorized as endangered.


UNESCO representative Mr Toit expressed his organization’s full commitment to supporting Nepal's efforts. He also conveyed his satisfaction over the recent discussions held during the International Scientific Committee meeting, where positive deliberations took place regarding both Lumbini and Kathmandu.


During the meeting, Minister Pandey requested UNESCO's support in getting Tilaurakot in Kapilvastu inscribed on the World Heritage List, as well as including other potential heritage sites in UNESCO's tentative list. He also briefed the UNESCO representative on the progress made so far by the 16-nation committee under the United Nations, which is working for the long-term promotion of Lumbini.
