KATHMANDU, Feb 12: Prime Minister and Chairman KP Sharma Oli chaired the 17th meeting of the Medical Education Commission (MEC) on Wednesday, where officials discussed increasing the number of seats for foreign students in private medical colleges.
In the meeting of the MEC held at the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers' office, Singha Durbar, members proposed increasing the number of foreign students. This proposal aims to facilitate the implementation of the commission's decision to provide residential doctors with allowances similar to those given to government employees in private medical colleges.
The MEC will present a proposal regarding this matter in the upcoming meeting. Currently, medical colleges arrange to teach foreign students, making up 10 percent of their total student population.

Earlier, in the 16th commission meeting held on February 7, the MEC addressed the demands of residential doctors (students). It decided that private medical colleges must provide a monthly allowance of Rs 48,436, matching the allowance given to government employees at the eighth grade.
The MEC, responsible for regulating medical education, monitoring, conducting entrance exams, determining student seat numbers, and setting tuition fees, decided in today's meeting to increase the number of postgraduate seats by 209.
The meeting also approved the Task Force's report on the study, teaching, and capacity building of nursing education, and discussed criteria for merging educational institutions and programs.
In the meeting, Prime Minister Oli emphasized that the government cannot provide free education to all students and must collaborate with private colleges. He stressed the need to address the raised issues through further work and reach a conclusion.
He urged participants to bring forward solid proposals to promote the growth of nursing education and improve the services and benefits for nurses.
