The group of 6-7 Maoist combatants thrashed Sabin Rai of Danabari-8 when he was returning home on his motorcycle at 7:30 p.m. "The combatants indiscriminately hit him with firewood when he stopped their vehicle to pick up his dropped mobile phone," Jhalak Rai, an eyewitness, said.
Rai fell unconscious after the attack. He has sustained critical injuries in different parts of the body.
He was taken to Kankai Hospital in Birtamod, Jhapa, for treatment the same night, the police said.
