Maldives names Ahmed Saleem as new Secy General

KATHMANDU, Feb 24: Maldivian government has nominated Ahmed Saleem, 63, for the post of SAARC Secretary General.



The Island nation made the nomination of former president of the Maldives Human Rights Commission after Dhiyana Saeed tendered resignation follwoing a political controversy one month ago. [break]



She was accused of violating the principles enshrined in the SAARC charter, after Saeed publicly condemned the arrest of Criminal Court´s Chief Judge Abdulla Mohamed as unconstitutional.



Dhiyana, who was the first woman SAARC Secretary General, had served only 11 months of the three-year term. Saleem, the newly-appointed Secretary General will serve the remaining two years starting March 1.



The SAARC Nepal Director Niranjan Man Singh Basnet confirmed the nomination of Saleem as new Secretary General.



"Maldivian government has sent a copy of the letter it sent to foreign ministries of all eight SAARC member countries about the nomination today," he said .



"The nomination has to be endorsed by all the member countries." Nepal is in line to head the SAARC Secretariat after Saleem´s term expires on March 2014.
