Commenting on the registration by the government on Tuesday of an amendment bill at the parliament secretariat in a bid to extend the CA term again, Rameshwor Raya Yadav, Vice-chairman of Madhesi People´s Rights Forum-Democratic (MPRF-D), said extension of the CA term cannot provide a way out of the current political impasse.[break]
“It is very sad that the major political parties easily reach consensus on CA term extension but they do not arrive at any agreement regarding the peace process and constitution writing,” Yadav added while talking to Republica.
Chairman of Tarai Madhes Democratic Party-Nepal (TMDP-N) Mahendra Yadav and Sadbhawana Party Chairman Rajendra Mahato said that the government should justify why it wants to extend the CA term.
“The government must justify the purpose of seeking a CA term extension” said Yadav and Mahato.
Similarly, Rajkishor Yadav, Co-chairman of Madhesi People´s Rights Forum-Republican (MPRF-R), said the government must utilize the extended time to conclude the peace process and constitution writing.
However, Yadav said the government should have taken all the parties, especially the UCPN (Maoist), into confidence. “It seemed the government wants to move ahead without even taking into confidence the UCPN (Maoist), which is an important part of the peace process. That is not good,” Yadav stated.
Likewise, General Secretary of Tarai Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP) Jitendra Sonal said an extended term of the CA would be an opportunity to take the peace process and constitution writing forward.
“If the political parties took the peace process and constitution writing forward within an extended timeframe, it would create a moral basis for further extension of the CA in case of incompletion of the twin tasks,” Sonal said.
