KATHMANDU, Aug 13: Low production caused by prolonged drought coupled with frequent bandas and strikes pushed up the price of red potato and big tomato by 157 percent and 90 percent over one year. [break]

A market research report released by UN World Food Program (WFP)-Nepal on Wednesday also showed that price of cauliflower and dry-onion had also increased by over 103 and 32 percent respectively during the period.

The report was jointly prepared by the WFP, the Ministry of Agriculture and Co-operatives, Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry and Consumers´ Interest Protection Forum.

The Market Watch for the month of July stated that price of cabbage and red potato up by 147 percent and 57 percent in the capital in July as compared to the prices recorded before three months. Similarly, tomato and cauliflower also become dearer by 78 percent and 54 percent respectively during the period.

“Poor crop production caused by drought has been the main cause for reduced supply in the consumer market. Bandas and strikes have further aggravated the supply situation,” said the report. “Poor supply, increasing demand, and poor market mechanisms are believed to be underlying cause of dramatic price increases.”

The report also said the prices of apple and banana increased by 80 and 14 percent respectively over the period.

Meanwhile, the WFP-Nepal has clarified that it did not distribute decayed rice to any food deficit district. Commenting of recent media reports about cholera outbreak in Jajarkot due to distribution of decayed rice by WFP, it clarified that only six sacks of rice were rotten due to rainfall while the sacks were being carried by the locals themselves.
