KATHMANDU, June 1: Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has reduced load-shedding to 42 hours a week from the existing 56 hours with effect from Wednesday due to what it termed the combined effect of increased power generation and a fall in demand, better operational efficiency and containing of transmission and distribution loss.

"We have tried every measure possible to improve operational efficiency and we have also been able to control theft of electricity by cracking down on the offenders," Chief of the Load Dispatch Center Chiranjibi Sharma said.[break]

According to the new schedule, there would be six hours of power cuts on four days, seven hours on two days and four hours once in a week.

"Though we have scheduled for six hours of power cuts on an average, the consumers will not have to face load-shedding even during some of the scheduled time," he assured.

He said the common people will get extra power supply as there is generally surplus power available at most of the time. He also claimed that the surplus power is not directed to the feeders which supply electricity to areas resided by VIPs.

"We are not looking at things from the VIP perspective at present. We are planning to supply the surplus power to those feeders that use up all the surplus power while also ensuring that the hours of power cuts remain uniform across all feeders on an average," he explained.

He put the cCurrent peak demand at 900 MW while supply is 642 MW.
