Landslides block major highways

KATHMANDU, July 20: Nine major highways across the country have been disrupted by landslides and flooding triggered by incessant rainfall. According to Nepal Police, several road sections in Koshi and Bagmati provinces are either completely or partially impassable.



For instance, the Mid-Hills Highway at Bokhim in Bhojpur Municipality-5 is currently open to one-way traffic due to flooding.


The Mechi Highway has been completely blocked by landslides at Rajduwali in Ilam and at Khobare Khola in Yangwarak Rural Municipality-1 of Panchthar district.

Similarly, the Diktel–Bhojpur section of the Mid-Hills Highway at Matekhola in Diktel Rupakot Majhuwagadhi Municipality-6 has also been completely blocked by landslides, police said.


In Bagmati Province, traffic on the BP Highway has been temporarily suspended due to the risk of flooding. Traffic on the Kathmandu–Hetauda Kanti Highway has also been suspended until further notice because of the threat of floods and landslides.


Nepal Police said the road section at Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality-4 in Sindhupalchok, as well as the Araniko Highway at Jurikhola and Kodari, has been completely blocked by landslides. Meanwhile, one-way traffic is in operation on the Pasang Lhamu Highway at Bokrejhunda in Gosainkunda Rural Municipality-6 of Rasuwa.


The Prithvi Highway at Phisling in Ichchhakamana Rural Municipality-3 of Chitwan has also been completely blocked by landslides.


In Benighat Rorang Rural Municipality-10 of Dhading, one-way traffic is operating on the Prithvi Highway at Tismarkhani, while the road at Jawangkhola remains completely blocked.


Authorities have warned that the risk of landslides and flooding remains high due to continuous rainfall and urged the public to check the latest road conditions with the relevant agencies before travelling.
