Labor leader Mavrikos meets PM

KATHMANDU, May 2: General Secretary of the World Federations of Trade Unions ( WFTU) George Mavrikos met with Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal at the latter’s official residence in Baluwatar on Sunday.



During the meeting, Mavrikos talked about the problems facing the workers across the world and said there was no alternative to socialist system to address the workers’ problems.[break]



He stressed that the government should be workers-friendly and it should make maximum effort to ensure workers’ rights, according to a source close to the Prime Minister.



In response, the prime minister said Nepal government has been taking steps to ensure rights and security of workers. He stressed on the need to fight against ultra-leftist ideology existing in the world communist movement.



Mavrikos, who is also the central committee member of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and a member of Greek parliament, arrived in Nepal to take part in programmes organised on the occasion of the 121st International Workers’ Day.
