KATHMANDU, April 12: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has introduced a car pooling system and an alternate vehicle operation scheme for officials in a bid to reduce fuel consumption amid ongoing shortages.
Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol said the decision was taken to mitigate the impact of fuel scarcity and prevent potential long-term disruptions to essential services. “Fuel shortages are being experienced globally. If vehicles continue to operate as usual, there may not be enough fuel even for essential services,” Dangol said, adding that reducing fuel consumption is the only viable option to avoid further complications.

The metropolitan office has already cut fuel quotas following a decision made during its 48th executive meeting.
Under the newly implemented car pooling system, officials living in the same area have been grouped together. Members of each group are required to use their vehicles on a rotational basis while also providing rides to colleagues from nearby locations.
The move is expected to significantly reduce the number of vehicles used for commuting to the office, thereby lowering overall fuel consumption.
