KATHMANDU, July 8: Cell phones have become an integral part of our lives. We can’t do without them. Be it for checking the time or emails, listening to songs, taking down notes or just surfing the web, cell phones are there.

It’s portable and accessible almost everywhere. But has the trend of using the internet on cell phones become an addiction of some sort? Frequent status updates and check-in’s on Facebook, checking mails, or even chatting, are probably the most common thing one does on their phones.[break]

We asked if frequent use of cell phones is starting to bug people.

Sakin Maharjan, expressing his view, says, “It’s true that we use cell phones for different social networking sites like Facebook and twitter and it has become like an addiction and we cannot easily give up.”

Adding to his disappointment over the network problem by the service providers, he adds, “I cannot live without my phone even for a single day. After college, I have to surf the web.”

Swechhya Sangroula opines, “Cell phones are making people forget the basic qualities of having a charismatic humane conversation with other people. They do not even make eye contact while talking and check their phones every time, like they were never interested in talking at all. My say is that we’re losing the humane connection and the warmth of the eye contact.”

Cell phones have taken over our lives and there is no doubt about that. However, using it to update status on Facebook while watching a movie or chatting online while having a conversation with a friend, can be easily termed as anti-social or rude. But for some, they just try and stay away from all the hassle.

“I have seen 17-year-olds not using cell phones. There parent’s won’t buy them expensive phones fearing they will get addicted to it. I use a simple phone too, Nokia 1616 at the moment, and I use Facebook on the computer only when I want to and I don’t think I’m addicted to it,” shares Abhishek Jha, who’s parent’s also refuse to buy him a new phone for the same reason that he will be using it too often.

In today’s time and generation, cell phones are a must. However, its use has led to problems like road accidents while talking on the phone or trying to SMS while driving. The radio frequency radiation can also cause health problems if used too frequently.

Things that, perhaps, everyone should keep in mind and get back into the social norms and have an eye to eye conversation instead of doing it online!
