BAGLUNG, Feb 12: Nepali Congress leader Ram Sharan Mahat said on Sunday should political parties agree the new constitution can be promulgated putting on hold the disputed issues of state restructuring.

“Federalism is a complex issue. Too many provincial states should not be imposed on the country,” Mahat said while speaking to reporters during a press meet organized by Baglung chapter of Press Union. [break]

Mahat opined that some five to seven provinces would be appropriate to Nepal and said the long-standing issue of state restructuring can be taken care of once the new statute is promulgated.

“Even Prachandaji (Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal) is positive on this,” Mahat said, “A sensitive issue like federalism should not be dealt with in haste.”

The NC leaders also said the State Restructuring Commission’s reports are politically motivated and went on to say there is now no relevance of the reports. “What is the meaning of having such reports,” he questioned.

Mahat, also a member of Special Committee on supervision, integration and rehabilitation of Maoist combatants, described the recent seizure by PLA commanders of checks handed out to voluntarily retiring combatants as feudal face of Maoists who professedly say are anti-feudalists.

The combatants should fight back the checks seizure and it is the government´s responsibility to provide them security, the NC leader added.
