Rabin Gurung, 18, of Chandibhanjyang village-9 in Chitwan, died Sunday night after police´s effort to stop locals from collecting donations resulted in a clash. [break]
The locals were collecting donations from buses along the Narayangadh-Mugling section of the East-West highway in the name of Shivaratri Festival.
Gurung allegedly sustained injuries to his head after falling to the ground following a scuffle with police. He breathed his last while being taken to Bharatpur for treatment. However, the locals have accused police of thrashing Gurung mercilessly which led to his death.
According to the locals, those boys who had set up barricade for collecting donations ran away on seeing the police. The police got hold of Gurung, who, the locals say, was not involved in collecting donations, and began mercilessly beating him up.
Chitwan district police chief SP Bhupal Bhandari has said that Gurung´s death was purely accidental.
The YAN obstructed vehicular movement along the Narayangadh-Mugling section of the highway protesting the death of Gurung claiming that he was its village committee member. The road blockade was cleared only Monday afternoon after the local administration struck a four-point deal with the agitators.
As per the deal, the family of the victim will get Rs one million as compensation.
Similarly, the administration will suspend all the six policemen, including Sub Inspector Hari Adhikari, involved in the clash and carry out probe into the incident.
Sunday night´s tragedy brought back the memory of an unfortunate incident some eight years ago when three local youths, who were collecting donations from passengers, died after a patrol team of Nepal Army (NA) opened fire on them.
Biraj Gurung, Sunil Gurung and Tirki Chepang, all of them below 18 years, were killed in the firing,
