Happy New You: Crazy about collarbones

Once upon a time, there was the 'thigh gap' trend. For this, you needed legs so thin that they didn't touch above the knees. Now it seems prominent collarbones are all the rage. Almost a year ago, a social media trend, where people uploaded selfies showing how many coins they could hold on their collarbones, started this unhealthy obsession with noticeable clavicles. Everyone wanted visible collarbones.

According to research, having a visible collarbone was deemed to be one of the most desirable body features, alongside a toned stomach and bottom. During my aerobics classes, I have met many women who have always inquired with the instructor about how they can have collarbones like models and Bollywood actresses. It's amazing how easily we are influenced by what we see of a world that focuses on beauty as the most important goal in life.

We are inspired by what we see on TV or magazine covers. All these glamorous models sashaying on the ramp, and actresses in movies have enviable collarbones. And we want them. But what we don't realize is that these models and actresses use clavicle contouring to enhance their collarbones and make it look that stunning. This makeup technique isn't something you are likely to use on a daily basis, as it's basically stage makeup.

Everybody I know has asked me this question at one point of time or the other: How do we get prominent collarbones? It's almost like they expect me to have a straightforward answer and are visibly disappointed when I don't provide them with one. But the thing is, my collarbones started showing after I started losing weight and became prominent over time. Sadly, this is not what many want to hear. They want a simple trick that will get them fabulous looking collarbones, and in as less time as possible.

But, like I've said a million times already, there are no shortcuts in weight loss and there is no shortcut here. The key to fabulous looking collarbones lies in losing overall weight and in the process, shedding weight from your face and neck region too. An unhealthy obsession with prominent collarbones isn't needed because the moment you start losing weight, the bones will start to show. You need to lose the excess fat around the neck region for the bones to start showing and that's that. No fitness expert, or instructor will tell you otherwise.

If you want to lose excess fat around your collarbone and make it stand out, you must do so as part of a total body weight-loss plan. A combination of exercise to slim and tone your chest area and whole body, plus a reduced-calorie diet, can help you lose fat around your collarbone, as well as the rest of your body. Plan to lose weight at a safe rate of one kilo per week and you are more likely to be successful in losing weight than if you aim to lose 10 kilos in a month.

Once you start losing weight you can try a few simple exercises to tone your chest and collarbone area. Lie on the floor while holding a dumbbell in each hand. Position the dumbbells by your chest with your elbows pointing away from you. Raise your arms straight up, extending the dumbbells toward the ceiling without locking your elbows. Lower your arms to the starting position to complete one repetition. I do 15 to 20 of these chest presses every alternate day.

Another quite simple exercise you can do is this: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Hold a dumbbell vertically in each hand with your hands in front of your chest. Maintain a soft bend in your elbows throughout the exercise. Arc your arms out to the sides and toward your back until you feel like you're squeezing your shoulder blades together. Return to the starting position slowly to complete one repetition. I do around 25-30 of this exercise twice a week.

A visible clavicle is a sign that you are in good shape and have less body fat. An obsession with attaining this, however, is a sign that something might not be right with the way you view and undertake fitness. Yes, there is something aesthetically pleasing about how you look when this bone is prominent. I'm not denying that. But it's not an unattainable goal and you needn't (or rather shouldn't) be so crazy about achieving it.

I have never focused on getting prominent collarbones. I only started the exercise regime I mentioned above to tone my upper body after I lost weight. So if you were to ask me how you can get fabulous collarbones, I'd tell you to focus on a healthy lifestyle and mix it up with the right amount of exercise, and before you know it you will have a wonderfully sculpted upper body with enviable collarbones.

Disclaimer: I am no fitness expert. I'm just someone who has worked hard to lose weight. I have consulted a dietician friend to find out what works for me, and suggest you do the same. I'm only sharing my weight loss experience through The Week and trying to motivate you all to adopt a healthy lifestyle. It's always best to get an experts advice before beginning a diet and workout plan. Stop exercising if you experience pain during the workout. Also never reduce your calorie intake to less than 1000.
