KATHMANDU, May 19: The government is preparing gender-friendly action plan for rehabilitation of the earthquake victims.

The National Planning Commission and other concerned ministries like the Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development and the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare have started preparing a gender-friendly action plan for rehabilitation of the earthquake victims, informed Purna Chandra Bhattarai, spokesperson of MoFALD.

The government decided to prepare women-friendly action plan after MoFALD on Monday ordered the local bodies to build temporary shelters for 150 people in each electoral constituency of the 14 districts affected by the earthquake."All such temporary shelters have to be women-friendly and we are preparing an action plan for it," said Bhattarai.

On Tuesday, the government bodies held a meeting with stakeholders to discuss the action plan, which will also be socially inclusive. "The action plan will also include senior citizens, disabled and children-friendly approaches while carrying out rehabilitation efforts," said Bhattarai.

"Incidents of sexual abuse in temporary shelters are being reported. Such incidents may go up and trigger another crisis. So, we are working to adopt gender-friendly approach to all our rehabilitation efforts like building temporary shelters for the quake victims,' said he.

On Monday, the MoFALD had directed the local bodies to identify safe open spaces for building temporary shelters for the earthquake victims in all the 14 most-affected districts.

"So, while building shelters, local bodies should ensure separate toilets for women and other facilities," said Bhattarai.
